Why this network exists
Black communities have always been philanthropic. The infrastructure is catching up.
For decades, research confirmed what practitioners knew: Black-led organizations were systematically underfunded relative to their impact. The pledges made after 2020 produced a new wave of Black foundations and funds. NNBFF exists to help these institutions grow, endure, and build collective power.

From our convening in New Orleans
Black philanthropic leaders came together in New Orleans to share knowledge, strengthen relationships, and build a more connected future for Black-led philanthropy.
Black Foundations & Funds are Black-led grantmaking institutions dedicated to advancing racial justice, equity, and community wealth. They channel resources directly to Black-led organizations, while modeling liberatory practices and self-determination.

Where We Are Now
A Network in Active Formation
Anchored at POISE Foundation in Pittsburgh, the Advisory Group is building the governance, staffing, and fundraising infrastructure to make this network permanent and self-sustaining.
2024: Building the Foundation
Identified more than 55 Black-led foundations and funds across the country.
Convened leaders to explore shared needs, opportunities, and the potential for greater collaboration.
Established the foundation for a connected national network focused on strengthening Black-led philanthropy.
2025: Strengthening the Network
Established an Advisory Group to help guide the Network’s development and priorities.
Expanded the infrastructure and capacity needed to move the Network forward.
Continued gathering insights from Black-led foundations and funds to shape the Network around member needs.
2026 & Beyond: Building Collective Power
Expand participation and deepen connections among Black-led foundations and funds nationwide.
Strengthen the infrastructure, resources, and relationships that help member organizations thrive.
Build a stronger collective voice to increase the visibility, influence, and long-term impact of Black philanthropy.
